Every Time You Go Away

When you stay too long in one place, you forget just how big the world is and how many different people inhabit it. Often when we are reminded of the vastness of the world, we are reminded of the vastness of our own selves. In that vastness hope emerges, things that were cloudy seem clearer. There is a renewed sense of purpose and peace. Continuing confirmation that we can slow down our thoughts, we can recognize our judgements, and that we can change.

I just returned from our annual Fall Yoga Bella retreat in the hills of Umbria and am still feeling the effects. Teaching on a retreat is the most treasured of all the things I offer.

What is a yoga retreat?

A yoga retreat is an opportunity to withdraw from the distractions of a modern daily life. It can be a full day, a long weekend, or up to a week or more. It includes yoga and meditation every day, the opportunity to be in a beautiful setting in nature and to eat healthy food. The eastern concept of a yoga retreat probably looked more humble and leaned towards an ashram, monastery or cave! A modern yoga retreat can be local, but often involves a trip to a location that lends itself to a luxury resort, or simple yet beautiful accommodations. Massage, hiking, cooking classes, or other outings are usually available. People with all levels of yoga experience come on yoga retreats, from an advanced practitioner to a true beginner. There is no preparation to do to sign up for a retreat, just a willingness to try something new.

Clearly, I want to inspire you to come on a retreat! Our February Mexico retreat sold out. Jess and I have a waiting list if things open up. Reply to this email and I will add you. Italy September 2023 with Patti Lupo OPEN and we only have 5 rooms left. CHECK IT OUT.

BUT you do not have to travel all the way to Italy to find space. Taking a yoga class, practicing on your own, or go for a walk in nature could be made into a retreat if you allow yourself the permission to truly disengage from your daily life. Turn off your phone, focus on your body and on your breathing. Treat your entire self with the respect and reverence it deserves and allow yourself some space.
