People Have the Power

Tough time to celebrate Independence Day. Women particularly are not feeling independent, nor are LGBTQ or any other minority. In a podcast I listened to this week with the actor Jeff Bridges, he mentions the concept of a Trimtab. Here's the story…

Buckminster Fuller ("Bucky") was commissioned by the Navy at the height of WWII to solve an engineering problem with large ships. These large ships steering mechanisms required more power to turn their rudders than their engines could produce. Bucky's invented the "Trimtab," a six-inch strip of metal attached by hinges to the trailing edge of a ship's rudder. As an engine's hydraulics force the Trimtab into the path of oncoming water, the pressure generated against it assists the rudder in making its turn. It is a little rudder on the big rudder. But the little guy begins to assert just enough force that the big guy can change its course. It starts small but can lead to bigger and larger incremental changes. More folks than just “The Dude” apply this concept to life. That even the smallest act, the slightest adjustment, one person can make an enormous impact.

Be a Trimtab.

There is no failing, only the possibility to be effective. Drop into the current and use the oppositional forces to strengthen your resolve. Stay strong and true. A titanium Trimtab is most effective in the stormiest of seas. And be flexible – find a full range of motion. Being rigid or unwilling to engage limits our growth and thus restricts our power.

I am currently on the board of an organization called Giving Hearts Yoga. The mission of Giving Hearts is to offer free/donation based online yoga classes with the option to donate to causes that matter most to the teachers who are giving their time.

Do you have an organization that you are especially passionate about raising money for? Do you want to encourage friends and family to support a cause that truly matters to you? If your answer was yes, and if you happen to be a yoga teacher, we would love to invite you to the Giving Hearts Yoga platform! Not only do you get to lead virtual classes to our combined communities, but you have the opportunity to fundraise for the organization of your choice, to truly make a difference.

Reach out to me if you are and interested teacher and I can "steer" you to Giving Hearts. AND reach out to me if there is an organization you are passionate about that needs our support.

Lastly, long time yoga pal Jess and I will be teaching Monday (tomorrow) July 4th at yogaview in Wilmette from 8-9a IN STUDIO only. Click below to sign up. yogaview is collecting funds for EVERYTOWN for the month of July. You can donate through venmo @yogaview_charity.

There is so much to do.

XO
